What Is Attribution?

Attribution is the method of identifying the source of a user acquisition, engagement, or purchase. In mobile marketing, it answers the fundamental question: Which marketing effort drove this user to install the app or take a specific action? Without attribution, marketers operate in the dark, unable to distinguish which campaigns, creatives, or partners actually deliver results.

For mobile apps, attribution is not a simple one-step process. It involves a complex chain of events—from ad impression to click, redirect, install, and post-install event—that must be accurately tracked and credited. This is where a Mobile Measurement Partner (MMP) like Affise MMP becomes essential.

How Mobile Attribution Works

When a user interacts with a mobile ad, the attribution process kicks off to seamlessly track the journey from click to conversion. An MMP acts as an impartial referee, connecting the dots through the following flow:

  1. The Engagement: A user clicks on or views an ad served by an ad network (e.g., inside another app or on social media).

  2. The Redirect: The click routes through a tracking link provided by the MMP (like Affise), which instantly captures device data and timestamp information before sending the user to the App Store or Google Play Store.

  3. The Install: The user downloads and opens the app for the first time.

  4. The Match: The MMP’s SDK inside the app fires a signal back to the server. The MMP matches this first open to the original ad engagement using identifiers like Device IDs (IDFA/GAID) or probabilistic modeling.

  5. The Postback: The MMP sends a postback to the winning ad network to credit them for the install, allowing advertisers to see the conversion in their dashboard.

Common Attribution Models

Not all user journeys are a simple click-to-install. Marketers use different attribution models to determine how credit is assigned when multiple touchpoints are involved:

  • Last-Click Attribution: The most common model in mobile marketing. 100% of the credit goes to the final ad the user clicked before downloading the app.

  • View-Through (Impression) Attribution: Credits an ad network if a user saw an ad (but didn’t click) and later installed the app within a specific time window.

  • Multi-Touch Attribution (MTA): Distributes credit across multiple interactions a user had with various ads leading up to the conversion, acknowledging the entire user journey.

Why Attribution is Critical for Advertisers

Without an MMP handling attribution, marketers are left guessing which campaigns actually work. Accurate attribution provides several distinct advantages:

  • Eliminates Double Counting: Because multiple ad networks might claim credit for the same user, an MMP acts as a single source of truth, attributing the install only once based on your defined logic.

  • Optimizes Ad Spend: By knowing exactly which creatives and channels yield the highest Lifetime Value (LTV), marketers can scale profitable campaigns and pause failing ones.

  • Prevents Mobile Ad Fraud: Advanced attribution platforms include fraud-detection suites that identify fake clicks, install hijacking, and click spamming before attributing credit.
