SKAdNetwork (SKAN)

i

Apple’s privacy-friendly attribution system.

What SKAdNetwork is

SKAdNetwork (SKAN) is Apple’s privacy-focused attribution framework designed to measure app installs and evaluate marketing campaign performance while protecting user privacy. Introduced in response to iOS privacy requirements, SKAN allows advertisers and app marketers to track conversions and campaign results without collecting personally identifiable information (PII).

Unlike traditional mobile attribution methods, SKAdNetwork provides a device-agnostic way to measure performance, ensuring compliance with Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) policies while still offering actionable insights.

Key features of SKAdNetwork

  • Privacy-first approach: SKAN restricts access to device-level identifiers and personal data.

  • Conversion value tracking: advertisers can assign numeric values to in-app events to indicate quality or engagement.

  • Time-delayed reporting: postbacks are sent with a delay to prevent real-time user-level tracking.

  • Aggregated insights: data is grouped to provide campaign-level performance metrics without revealing individual user behavior.

Challenges and considerations

While SKAdNetwork provides privacy protection, it also introduces some limitations:

  • Delayed reporting: postbacks are not instantaneous, making real-time optimization more challenging.

  • Limited granularity: insights are aggregated, so individual-level user behavior is not visible.

  • Conversion value constraints: advertisers have a restricted number of conversion values and time windows to capture post-install actions.

  • Modeling required: marketers must rely on modeling and statistical inference to understand post-install performance accurately.

To optimize campaigns under SKAN, advertisers often combine aggregated SKAdNetwork data with other measurement tools, probabilistic modeling, and cohort analysis to make informed decisions while respecting user privacy.
