Cross-Device Tracking

i

Tracking a user's interactions across multiple devices.

What is Cross-Device Tracking?

Cross-Device Tracking is the analytical method used by Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs) to identify and link a single user’s behavior across multiple devices, such as a desktop computer, smartphone, tablet, and smart TV.

This enables marketers to map a continuous, unified user journey, ensuring that an ad clicked on a laptop can be accurately credited when the user ultimately downloads the app and makes a purchase on their mobile phone.

How Cross-Device Tracking Works

MMPs and advertising platforms rely on two primary methodologies to construct a “device graph”—the database that connects different hardware to a single identity.

Tracking Method How it Works Accuracy Privacy Status
Deterministic Matching Links devices using exact, persistent user data, primarily through logged-in accounts (e.g., matching a hashed email used to log into a website on desktop and an app on mobile). High (Near 100%) Fully compliant, as it relies on first-party consented data.
Probabilistic Matching Uses machine learning to analyze anonymous data points—such as IP addresses, Wi-Fi networks, browsing habits, and operating systems—to infer that two devices belong to the same person. Medium to High (70-90%) Heavily scrutinized and increasingly restricted by Apple’s ATT and upcoming privacy regulations.

Why Cross-Device Tracking is Essential

Without cross-device infrastructure, mobile marketing data becomes heavily siloed, leading to critical errors in budget allocation.

  • Solving the Double-Counting Problem: If a user clicks a web ad on their laptop and later installs the app via a mobile ad, a siloed system counts this as two separate users. Cross-device tracking deduplicates this, revealing it as a single acquisition path.

  • True ROAS Calculation: High-ticket purchases and subscription sign-ups often involve research on a desktop before execution on mobile. Tracking this flow ensures top-of-funnel web campaigns receive the attribution credit they deserve.

  • Web-to-App Optimization: It powers seamless transitions between mobile browsers and native apps, allowing marketers to run cheaper web campaigns that successfully funnel users into high-retention app environments.

Cross-Device Capabilities in Affise MMP

Affise MMP utilizes advanced Identity Resolution (IDR) to ensure your attribution data remains accurate across screens without violating user privacy.

  • Unified User Profiles: Affise creates a single source of truth for each user, stitching together their interactions from mobile web, desktop, and native apps into one cohesive timeline.

  • Privacy-First Architecture: Affise prioritizes deterministic, hashed matching (like login IDs) to maintain compliance with GDPR, CCPA, and Apple’s ATT framework, reducing reliance on easily blocked cookies.

  • Deep Linking Infrastructure: Affise provides the necessary deep linking technology to safely pass attribution data when routing a user from a desktop email or social media post directly into a specific page within your mobile app.
