APK App Tracking

i

Monitoring user acquisition and engagement for Android apps distributed via APK files (outside Google Play).

Why APK Tracking Matters

Traditional app store tracking relies on store-specific attribution mechanisms. However, APK-distributed apps face unique challenges:

  • No automatic install referrer – Without Google Play Services, standard attribution methods don’t work

  • Multiple distribution channels – APKs can be hosted on websites, sent via email, shared through social media, or distributed via QR codes

  • Alternative app stores – Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps, and other regional stores each have their own tracking requirements

  • Side-loading – Users can install APKs directly from files without any store involvement

Without proper APK tracking, marketing teams operate blindly—unable to determine which campaigns drive installs or how to allocate budgets effectively.

How Affise MMP Handles APK App Tracking

Affise MMP (Mobile Measurement Partner) provides end-to-end APK tracking that monitors every download and installation across both store and off-store distributions. The platform treats self-hosted APKs as first-class install sources, not a blind spot in your attribution data.

Deterministic Attribution for APKs

Affise MMP uses deterministic tracking methods to measure APK installs with the same precision as store installs. This is achieved through:

  • Install Referrer matching – Capturing referrer information from the Android system

  • Device-ID matching – Using GAID (Google Advertising ID) to match installs to specific campaigns

  • Probabilistic fingerprinting – When deterministic methods aren’t available, Affise uses probabilistic models to attribute installs

This dual approach ensures that self-hosted and third-party APK installs are measured deterministically at store-level precision.

Complete Visibility Across All Channels

Affise MMP provides comprehensive visibility into every installation, regardless of the distribution method:

  • Play Store – Standard store installs with full referrer data

  • Direct downloads – APKs downloaded directly from your website

  • QR codes – Custom QR codes for offline or print campaigns

  • Side-loading – APKs installed manually by users

  • Alternative stores – Huawei AppGallery, Samsung Galaxy Store, Xiaomi GetApps, and more

Capturing the Full User Journey

Affise MMP tracks the complete user journey from first download to in-app actions. This includes:

  • Install attribution – Which campaign or channel drove the install

  • In-app events – Registrations, purchases, level completions, and other key actions

  • Retention metrics – How long users stay engaged after installation

  • Revenue tracking – Attribution of in-app purchases and subscription revenue back to the source campaign

Key Features of Affise APK Tracking

1. Custom Tracking Links and QR Codes

Generate unique URLs and QR codes for every distribution channel—whether it’s your website, email campaigns, social media, or partner sites. Each link captures attribution data that ties installs back to specific campaigns and creatives.

2. Rich Attribution Dimensions

Segment installations by a wide range of dimensions to gain deep audience insights:

  • Geographic location

  • Device model and manufacturer

  • Operating system version

  • Carrier/network provider

  • Campaign and creative variant

3. Real-Time Postbacks and API

Every install and attribution event can be pushed immediately to your BI tools, ad networks, or internal systems via webhooks or REST API. Affise streams every click, impression, install, and in-app event to S3 or BigQuery in real time—no per-row meter, no nightly batch.

4. Uninstall Tracking

Track users who uninstall your app and identify those who reinstall. This provides crucial insights into retention and re-engagement opportunities.

5. Fraud Protection

Affise MMP includes built-in fraud detection through deterministic checks, probabilistic modeling, and SKAdNetwork validation to reduce fake installs and double-counting.

Setting Up APK Tracking in Affise MMP

Adding an APK for tracking in Affise MMP is straightforward:

  1. Navigate to Attribution > Applications and click Add new app

  2. In the store selection window, choose No market APK

  3. Select the application status:

    • Pending approval / Not published – App exists but isn’t live

    • Not published APK – APK file not added to any app market

  4. Upload the APK file from your device

  5. Enter the package name/ID (application ID)

  6. Add app name, description, timezone, and currency settings

Once configured, integrate the Affise MMP SDK into your Android app. The SDK collects app usage statistics, device identifiers, deeplink usage, and tracks the install referrer.

SDK Integration

Affise provides SDKs for multiple platforms:

  • Android SDK (Kotlin/Java)

  • iOS SDK

  • React Native – Affise Attribution React Native Library

  • Flutter – Affise Attribution Flutter plugin

To initialize the SDK, you’ll need your Affise App ID and Secret Key, which are generated when you add your application to your Affise MMP account.

APK Tracking vs. Store Tracking: Key Differences

Feature Store Tracking (Google Play) APK Tracking (Affise MMP)
Attribution method Install Referrer (automatic) Deterministic referrer + device-ID matching
Distribution channels Single store Multiple: web, QR, email, side-loading, alternative stores
Tracking precision High (store-provided) Store-level precision
Campaign segmentation Standard dimensions Rich dimensions including geo, device, OS, carrier
Fraud detection Limited Built-in deterministic and probabilistic checks

Affise MMP vs. Other MMPs for APK Tracking

Affise vs. Kochava

Affise treats self-hosted APKs as a first-class install source, while Kochava’s off-store APK flows are less of a primary path. Additionally, Affise includes real-time raw data export as standard, whereas Kochava requires its $2,000/month Enterprise tier for raw-data queries.

Affise vs. Adjust

Affise measures self-hosted and third-party APK installs deterministically at store-level precision. Adjust’s off-store APK flows are less of a first-class path. Affise also includes fraud detection and partner management in the same platform, while Adjust charges extra for fraud prevention (estimated +15–30%).

Industry Recognition

Affise MMP is recognized as the niche choice for APK distribution in the mobile measurement space. It’s listed among the top eight MMPs alongside AppsFlyer, Branch, Kochava, Tenjin, and Airbridge.

Best Practices for APK App Tracking

1. Use Deterministic Methods When Possible

Implement the Affise MMP SDK correctly to capture install referrer and device IDs. Deterministic attribution is always more accurate than probabilistic methods.

2. Create Unique Links for Each Channel

Generate unique tracking links and QR codes for every distribution channel. This enables granular campaign performance analysis.

3. Track In-App Events

Don’t stop at install tracking. Implement in-app event tracking to measure registrations, purchases, and other conversion actions that demonstrate ROI.

4. Monitor for Fraud

Enable fraud detection features to identify and filter out fake installs, click spamming, and bot traffic that waste advertising budgets.

5. Leverage Real-Time Data

Use Affise’s real-time data export capabilities to feed attribution data into your BI tools and optimize campaigns on the fly.
