Supply-side Platform (SSP)

i

A technology platform used by publishers (app developers, websites) to automate the sale of ad inventory to demand-side platforms (DSPs) and ad exchanges. Maximizes ad revenue by connecting to multiple buyers.

How SSPs work

Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) manage the process of selling digital ad inventory for publishers, including websites and mobile apps. They act as intermediaries between publishers and advertisers, making available ad impressions in real time.

When a user visits a website or app, and an ad slot becomes available, the SSP generates a bid request and sends it to connected Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs) or ad exchanges. Advertisers respond with bids based on criteria such as audience demographics, location, device type, or campaign goals. The highest bidder wins, and the SSP automatically delivers the winning ad to the user.

This automation streamlines ad selling, increases competition among buyers, and helps publishers maximize revenue from their inventory without manual negotiation.

Best practices for SSP integration

  • Ensure accurate ad placement and inventory categorization to attract relevant buyers.

  • Monitor performance metrics regularly to adjust floor prices and optimize revenue.

  • Combine SSPs with header bidding or other monetization strategies to maximize yield.

  • Maintain compliance with privacy regulations, such as GDPR and CCPA, when transmitting user-level data.

Why SSPs matter for publishers

SSPs are crucial for publishers looking to monetize digital inventory efficiently. They:

  • Simplify the ad sales process by automating auctions

  • Increase competition among advertisers, which can lead to higher revenue

  • Provide performance insights, helping publishers optimize inventory and pricing

  • Allow publishers to focus on content creation while ensuring maximum revenue potential

By leveraging an SSP, publishers can maintain control over their inventory, attract high-quality advertisers, and boost the profitability of their apps or websites.
