Install Referrer
Legacy Android attribution mechanism that passed campaign data from Google Play Store to installed apps.
What it is and how it works
Install Referrer Tracking is an older way to figure out where app installs are coming from. It passes campaign information from the Google Play Store to the app after it’s installed, so marketers can see which ads or promotions actually led to a download.
When someone clicks on a tracked link to an app in the Play Store, the store records campaign details. After the app is installed and opened for the first time, it pulls that information from the Install Referrer system. This shows which ad or campaign drove the install.
Limits
Although useful, Install Referrer has several limitations. Firstly, it is exclusive to Android, so it cannot be used for cross-platform attribution or tracking installs on iOS. Secondly, it does not offer advanced capabilities such as real-time fraud detection, device-level tracking, or complex multi-touch attribution. As a result, many developers now use Install Referrer in conjunction with modern attribution tools to gain a complete and accurate view of campaign performance.
Additionally, the method relies on the app being opened at least once after installation to capture the referrer data. If users never open the app, the system cannot track the install, potentially resulting in underreported campaign results.
Why it still matters
Despite its limitations, Install Referrer continues to be valuable for Android app marketers. It provides a simple and reliable way to connect ads to installs, making it useful for evaluating basic campaign performance and measuring historical trends. For developers maintaining older apps or campaigns that rely on Android-only tracking, Install Referrer remains a practical tool for understanding where installs are coming from and identifying which campaigns are driving results.
While more advanced attribution platforms now offer cross-device tracking, fraud prevention, and real-time insights, Install Referrer remains a foundational mechanism for Android install attribution, providing a straightforward view of campaign effectiveness that is still relevant for many marketing teams.
