First-Touch Attribution

i

Attribution model crediting the first touchpoint in the user journey.

What is first touch attribution

First touch attribution is an attribution model that gives full credit for a conversion or install to the very first touchpoint in the user journey. This means the initial interaction a user has with a brand — such as clicking an ad, visiting a landing page, or engaging with a campaign — receives 100 percent of the credit for driving the final action.

Why first touch attribution matters

This model is useful for understanding which channels or campaigns are most effective at generating initial awareness. By highlighting the earliest point of contact, marketers can identify the sources that are best at capturing user interest, even if the user later interacts with multiple additional touchpoints before converting.

Strengths

  • Simple to implement and easy to interpret

  • Provides clear visibility into upper funnel performance

  • Highlights which channels or campaigns drive initial awareness

  • Helps justify investment in reach and discovery focused activities

Limitations

  • Ignores all subsequent touchpoints in the user journey

  • Undervalues mid funnel and lower funnel interactions such as retargeting or email follow ups

  • Provides an incomplete view of what truly drives conversions

  • Can lead to skewed budget allocation if used as the only attribution model
