A system that stores, delivers, and tracks ad placements.

How Does an Ad Server Work?

The ad serving process happens in milliseconds. When a user opens an app or visits a website, a complex background process is triggered:

  1. The Request: The user’s browser or mobile app sends a request to the publisher’s ad server, indicating that an ad slot is available.

  2. The Decision: The ad server analyzes the user’s data (such as geographic location, device type, and behavioral data) and campaign targeting settings to decide which ad is the most relevant and profitable to display.

  3. The Delivery: The ad server retrieves the creative (banner, video, native ad) and delivers it to the user’s screen.

  4. The Tracking: The server records an «impression.» If the user interacts with the ad, it records a «click» and generates a tracking link that is often sent to an MMP for further attribution.

Types of Ad Servers

There are two primary types of ad servers, categorized by who utilizes them:

  • First-Party Ad Servers (Publisher Ad Servers): Used by publishers (website or app owners) to manage the ad inventory on their own properties. They help publishers decide which ads to display, whether from direct advertiser deals or programmatic networks, to maximize yield.

  • Third-Party Ad Servers (Advertiser Ad Servers): Used by advertisers and ad agencies to host ad creatives and track campaign performance across multiple publishers and networks. They act as a centralized hub to verify that the metrics reported by publishers are accurate.

How Ad Servers Work with Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs)

While an ad server is responsible for delivering the ad and tracking the initial click or impression, a Mobile Measurement Partner (MMP) is responsible for attributing the subsequent user behavior (like downloading an app or making an in-app purchase) to that specific ad interaction.

The Synergy Between Ad Servers and Affise MMP

When running mobile app campaigns, your ad server and Affise MMP communicate continuously to provide a complete picture of the user journey:

  1. Click Tracking: When a user clicks an ad served by an ad server, the click data is passed through an Affise MMP tracking link.

  2. App Install: If the user installs and opens the app, the Affise SDK registers the event.

  3. Attribution: Affise MMP uses deterministic or probabilistic matching to tie the install back to the specific click/impression generated by the ad server.

  4. Postbacks: Once attribution is confirmed, Affise MMP fires a real-time postback to the ad server, notifying it that the campaign successfully drove an install.

This seamless integration enables marketers to calculate true Return on Ad Spend (ROAS) and optimize their user acquisition strategies based on accurate, privacy-compliant data.

  • Ad Server: The database and engine that stores, decides, and serves the ad creatives to the screen.

  • Demand-Side Platform (DSP): A platform that allows advertisers to automatically buy ad inventory from multiple sources in real time. DSPs often integrate with third-party ad servers.

  • Supply-Side Platform (SSP): A platform that helps publishers automate the selling of their ad space to DSPs and ad networks.
