App install attribution is the process of assigning credit to a specific marketing source (such as an ad network, campaign, or channel) for a mobile app install. It uses tracking models and technology to determine which touchpoint led a user to download and open an app for the first time.
How Does App Install Attribution Work?
Unlike web attribution—which relies heavily on cookies and UTM parameters—mobile app attribution uses specialized technology to bridge the gap between ad networks, app stores, and the application itself.
The standard flow within Affise MMP looks like this:

The Touchpoint: A user views an ad (impression) or interacts with it (click). The ad network sends this engagement data to the MMP.

The App Store: The user is redirected to the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to download the application.

Key Attribution Methods Used by Affise MMP

Install Referrer (Android): The primary and most accurate method for Android. When a user clicks a link and is directed to Google Play or the Huawei App Store, a unique referral string is passed to the app upon installation.

Probabilistic Modeling: When direct identifiers are unavailable, this method uses temporary, non-unique device characteristics (such as OS version, device type, and network data) to match users to ad clicks in real time.

Pre-install Attribution: Attributes users who open an app that was pre-loaded onto their device by the manufacturer (OEM). If the user hasn’t interacted with other ads prior to launch, the pre-install takes top attribution priority.
