Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

i

An open-source framework developed by Google to optimize web pages for near-instant loading on mobile devices.

In the context of mobile user acquisition and measurement, AMP serves as a bridge between a user clicking a mobile ad and reaching the destination (such as an app store or a landing page). By loading near-instantaneously, AMP reduces bounce rates that typically occur due to slow mobile web load times.

How AMP Works

AMP achieves its speed through a stripped-down version of HTML (AMP HTML) and a strict set of technical constraints. Key components include:

  • AMP Cache: A content delivery network (CDN) that caches AMP pages, allowing them to be served instantly from Google’s servers rather than the advertiser’s origin server.

  • Restricted JavaScript: AMP uses a pre-built library that prioritizes rendering, preventing third-party scripts from blocking the page load.

  • Optimized Resources: Elements like images and videos are lazy-loaded only when they are about to be viewed.

Why AMP Matters for MMPs

For an MMP (Mobile Measurement Partner) like Affise, AMP impacts the accuracy and speed of attribution. When a user clicks an ad that lands on an AMP page before being redirected to an app store, the tracking window is extremely short.

Key considerations for measurement include:

  • Click-to-Install Speed: AMP ensures that the user journey from ad click to app store redirect is instantaneous, preserving the integrity of the attribution link.

  • Reduced Data Loss: Because AMP pages load before the user loses interest, there is less likelihood of tracking parameters being dropped during the redirect chain.

  • Landing Page Optimization: For advertisers running mobile web campaigns (where the goal is a web conversion rather than an app install), AMP ensures that the tracking pixel fires reliably before the user exits the page.

AMP vs. Standard Mobile Pages

Feature Standard Mobile Page AMP
Load Speed 3–10+ seconds < 1 second
JavaScript Custom/Unlimited Restricted to AMP library
Hosting Self-hosted Can be served via Google AMP Cache
Bounce Rate High on slow connections Significantly lower

As mobile advertising budgets continue to grow, user patience for slow load times diminishes. AMP allows marketers to maintain high conversion rates on the mobile web. For MMPs, ensuring that AMP pages are correctly configured to pass click IDs and attribution parameters is essential to prevent misattribution in fast-paced user acquisition campaigns.
