A platform that connects advertisers with publishers to distribute ads.

How Do Ad Networks Work?

The core function of an ad network is to facilitate media buying. The process generally works as follows:

  1. Inventory Aggregation: Publishers install the ad network’s SDK (Software Development Kit) or use API integrations to make their available ad slots visible to the network.

  2. Campaign Setup: Advertisers use the ad network’s platform to set up their campaigns, defining their target audience, budget, and bidding strategy (e.g., CPM, CPC, CPI, or CPA).

  3. Ad Matching & Delivery: When a user opens an app or visits a website, the ad network’s algorithm instantly evaluates the available campaigns and serves the most relevant ad to the user based on targeting criteria.

  4. Tracking and Measurement: The ad network tracks impressions, clicks, and basic conversions. However, to get unbiased, cross-network attribution, advertisers use a Mobile Measurement Partner (MMP).

Types of Ad Networks

Not all ad networks operate the same way. Depending on your user acquisition (UA) strategy, you may work with several different types:

While both connect buyers and sellers, an ad network curates and aggregates inventory before selling it to advertisers, often adding a markup. An ad exchange is a digital marketplace where advertisers and publishers buy and sell inventory directly in real-time through Real-Time Bidding (RTB), usually facilitated by Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs) and Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs).

How Ad Networks and MMPs Work Together

Ad networks are responsible for driving traffic, while an MMP is responsible for measuring and attributing that traffic accurately. Without an MMP, advertisers running campaigns on multiple ad networks face duplicate attributions, as every network tries to claim credit for the same install.

The Workflow:

  1. The advertiser generates a tracking link within their MMP and places it in the ad network’s campaign setup.

  2. When a user clicks the ad, the MMP records the click.

  3. If the user installs the app, the MMP SDK fires, and the MMP credits the install to the correct ad network based on strict attribution logic (usually last-click).

  4. The MMP sends a postback to the winning ad network to inform their algorithm that the conversion was successful, helping the network optimize future ad delivery.
