What Is Install Hijacking?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Install hijacking is a form of mobile ad fraud where a malicious actor or fraudulent network intercepts the attribution signal for an app install to falsely claim credit for it. The install itself is real\u2014a genuine user downloaded the app\u2014but the credit for that conversion is stolen from the organic source or the legitimate marketing channel that actually drove the user to the app store<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike SDK Spoofing or Device Farms, which fabricate entirely fake users and installs, install hijacking targets <\/span>high-intent organic users<\/span><\/strong>. These are users who were already going to install the app; the fraudster simply inserts themselves into the last few milliseconds of the user journey to steal the payout<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

How it works<\/h2>\n

Fraudsters actively monitor user behavior to detect high-intent actions<\/strong>, such as clicking an app store link or initiating a download. At the precise moment a user shows intent to install an app, the fraudster injects a fake ad click<\/strong> using malware, compromised SDKs, or fraudulent apps running silently in the background.<\/p>\n

Many mobile attribution models rely on last-click attribution<\/strong>, which records the most recent click before an install as the source of the conversion. By timing their fake click to coincide with a user\u2019s natural download, fraudsters are able to claim credit for an install that would have occurred organically. As a result, the install is incorrectly attributed to a paid campaign rather than the true organic source.<\/p>\n

This makes install hijacking particularly insidious because it targets high-quality users<\/strong> who are already likely to complete the install, making it difficult to detect using standard attribution tracking.<\/p>\n
